The Next Generation Green Roof  

We are building a next-generation green roof product that utilizes our proprietary ultra-lightweight growing medium, GaiaSoil, to support the best green roofs on the market. These modular units are hydrologically connected to one another, offering traditional green roof capabilities but at a fraction of the cost and installation time – ideal for all building types ranging from residential homes to massive warehouses.

GaiaSoil provides unparalleled ecological function at a fraction of the weight of competitors’ products. Composed of recycled Styrofoam, GaiaSoil reflects our commitment to reusing waste stream materials to improve the environmental performance of cities.

We started Leaf Island with the question: how do we put more green roofs on buildings? As great as our GaiaSoil Green Roof Systems are, they still require a custom project design for each client. This is the industry standard, but it requires a significant cost and time committment from both parties.

That’s when we leveraged our team’s expertise in green infrastructure design to create the Hextray™ Modular Green Roof. HexTray Modular Green Roofs consist of hexagonal trays that connect to one another with minimal space between each unit, creating a self-contained, seamless green roof design.
